1. A good driver should always have plenty of time to operate the controls. Last minute gear changes occur when the hazard has been seen late, the speed is incorrect for the circumstances and a general lack of planning has taken place. Poor concentration can also be a contributory factor.

The consequences of hurried last minute gear changes are reduced safety margins, vehicle instability and greater likelihood of being involved in an accident.
